Before I got into mixing, I spent a lot of time producing music and working with artists.

Back then, I worked with a lot of artists, and I was a pretty decent producer. The kind of productions I made weren’t things you would usually hear. I had a particular vision for the songs I worked on, and I was deeply involved in the entire process, from the lyrics to the final production. We were shaping the song together, deciding what it should communicate and how it should make people feel.

But when it got to the mixing stage, I often found that the mixing engineers didn’t quite understand that vision. They would mix the songs the way they would mix any other song, without necessarily understanding the emotion I was trying to convey through the production.

And that was frustrating, because I knew what the song was supposed to make someone feel. I had been part of creating that feeling from the very beginning, but somehow, it wasn’t making it into the final mix.

So I decided to start mixing my own songs.

It took me a long time to find my footing with mixing. But throughout that journey, there was one question I kept coming back to, one question that guided me through every decision until I got to the final result:

Does this song sound the way it’s supposed to sound?

And I don’t mean in terms of clarity, or how clean the mix is, or any of those technical things. I mean, does it make the listener feel what they’re supposed to feel when they hear this song?
